Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill star Lucy Liu has signed on to play the villain role in the Shazam! sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Liu will star in the role of Kalypso alongside Hellen Mirren, who is playing Kalypso’s sister Hespera.

Director David F. Sandberg will return to direct the film with screenplay from Henry Garden, and Zachary Levi is returning in the title role to continue the story of Billy Batson, a teenager who, upon reciting the magic words, is struck by lightning and turns into his adult superhero alter ego, Shazam.

Lucy Liu’s recent work has seen her in television shows like the CBS drama Elementary and the CBS All Access dark comedy series, Why Women Kill. Her most recent feature film performance was in the 2020 comedic drama Stage Mother.

The first Shazam! released in 2019 and quickly became one of the highest rated films within the DC Extended Universe. The film has certified fresh critic score of 90% with 409 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 82% from over 10,000 ratings.

The superhero sequel will also star Adam Brody, Marta Milans, Asher Angel, Rachel Zegler and Faithe Herman. The film isn’t set to release until June 2, 2023, and plot details are still unknown.
