Peter Berg, director of the upcoming Call of Duty movie for Paramount, recently spoke on the tone the film is expected to have. The film, based on the popular first-person shooter video game series, will mainly draw its inspiration from the Modern Warfare subseries of games.
“If you really look at the missions and the storylines and the characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, these are complicated humans. These are not, and no disrespect, cartoon characters or comic books. These are very nuanced storylines; there’s a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe. Yes, there’s violence and hardware and equipment and killing. But underneath it, I think the game, and the creators of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry.”
Berg seems intent on crafting a serious story for the adaptation. Berg has helmed other war movies such as Lone Survivor and the upcoming The Mosquito Bowl for Netflix. His other notable directed works include Hancock, Deepwater Horizon and Friday Night Lights. The video game franchise Call of Duty began in 2003 and has spanned dozens of titles over the past 2 decades. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare launched in 2007 and appears to be the main inspiration for the film.
The film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures and is expected to release on June 30, 2028.
