Wonder Woman is being hailed as one of the best DC Comics films of all time, and its box office sales are pushing this opinion. Wonder Woman stands tall at the top of the box office for the second week in a row, sitting at $52.8 million with its biggest competitor, The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, receiving a measly $30.5 million in its debut weekend, according to Deadline.
The Mummy has stumbled right out of the gate, with an aggregate score of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, and mediocre score on CinemaScore (B-) and IMDb (6.1). Interestingly, both Wonder Woman and The Mummy are highly competitive overseas, with Wonder Woman garnering $125 million in its first week, while The Mummy has already received $56.8 million and is projected to receive over $139 million, which would be Tom Cruise’s highest grossing opening weekend ever.
The Mummy is the first of many planned monster films for Universal’s new cinematic universe aptly named Dark Universe. After the domestic failure in opening weekend, it will be interesting to see what Universal will do with the next film in the new franchise.
Other strong box office contenders include Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie ($35 million through two weekends) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($128 million through four weekends).
