In her relatively short career, Greta Gerwig has quickly established herself as force to be reckoned with in indie cinema. With a modest start in “mumblecore” films, Gerwig starred, in quick succession, in Joe Swanberg’s Hannah Takes the Stairs, the Duplass Brother’s Baghead, and Ti West’s House of the Devil. Eventually, she delivered star-making performances in Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg and Frances Ha.
It’s been nearly 10 years since her directorial debut, Nights and Weekends, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Swanberg. From the official trailer, Lady Bird appears to be an intimate character-driven film, colored by naturalistic humor (think Ghost World). Written by Gerwig as well, Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, an angsty teenager looking to escape her humdrum suburban neighborhood and uninspiring all-girl Catholic high school. Laurie Metcalf plays her struggling mother while Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), Tracy Letts (writer of August: Osage County), Timothée Chalamet (Men, Women & Children), and Odeya Rush (The Giver) co-star.
Lady Bird is being distributed by A24. In recent years, the film distributor has experienced a renaissance of sorts: Green Room, A Ghost Story, It Comes at Night, Good Time, and the upcoming James Franco film The Disaster Artist. Let’s hope that Lady Bird continues their stellar track record.
Lady Bird is set for theatrical release on November 10, 2018.
