Tom Cruise has joined in on the protests arising against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). According to Deadline, the actor has returned all three Golden Globe trophies that he has received over the years today, Monday, May 10, 2021.
Cruise is the latest celebrity following Scarlett Johansson to join Netflix, Amazon, and NBC, and others in criticizing the organization’s unsatisfactory progress toward addressing its lack of diversity. NBC announced that they would no longer air the award show in 2022.
Not long before the 2021 Golden Globes ceremony, the Los Angeles Times reported that HFPA has not a single Black member. Although they recently unveiled steps they intend to take to address the problem, their plan has been heavily criticized for not making changes soon enough.
The awards that Cruise has returned are for winning Best Actor for 1997 Jerry Maguire, the Best Actor for 1990 Born on the Fourth of July, and the Best Supporting Actor for 2000 Magnolia. Cruise has also earned four nominations over the years for his films.
Cruise is the first actor to announce that he was returning his Golden Globe trophies, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if not more actors decided to follow in his lead and return their trophies in protest against HFPA.
