John Carpenter To Receive ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker Of The Year Award; Bonnie Koehler And Christopher Nelson Tapped For Career Honors

Genre pioneer and master of horror John Carpenter will receive the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards, the American Cinema Editors announced Wednesday. The ceremony is set to take place February 6, 2027, at UCLA’s Royce Hall, with Patton Oswalt returning as master of ceremonies to celebrate achievements across 14 film and television editing categories.

Carpenter’s landmark filmography has left an indelible imprint on independent cinema and genre storytelling, encompassing foundational classics including Halloween—which broke box-office records as one of the most profitable independent films in history—The Thing, The Fog, Escape from New York, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, and In the Mouth of Madness.

“John Carpenter makes movies that get under your skin and stay there,” ACE President Sabrina Plisco said in a statement. “Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York—these films have scared, thrilled and shaped generations of audiences and filmmakers alike. Few directors understand rhythm, tension and restraint the way he does, and he has always trusted his editors to help him find it. That collaboration is exactly what this honor celebrates.”

Past recipients of the prestigious honor include Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Jon M. Chu, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, and J.J. Abrams.

In addition to Carpenter’s tribute, ACE announced that Bonnie Koehler, ACE, and Christopher Nelson, ACE, will be honored with Career Achievement Awards for their contributions to post-production:

Bonnie Koehler, ACE: Across 15 feature films and nine television series, Koehler’s editorial credits include Brian De Palma’s Raising Cain, Curtis Hanson’s Bad Influence, Grumpy Old Men, and The Associate, alongside sound design credits on The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Poltergeist. On television, she earned an Emmy nomination for L.A. Law and an ACE Eddie nomination for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Christopher Nelson, ACE: With over 50 television movies, pilots, and series to his credit, Nelson won a Primetime Emmy for cutting the acclaimed series finale of Lost and earned additional nominations for Six Feet Under, Mad Men, and China Beach. His contemporary credits include Godfather of Harlem, When We Rise, Bates Motel, Waco, and The Terror.

Official nominations for the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards will be announced on January 14, 2027.
