Sofia Boutella to Star in ‘The Mummy’ Reboot

Algerian-French dancer, Sofia Boutella may have one of her biggest roles yet, starring in Universal’s The Mummy. She will play the titular monster in the upcoming reboot according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Boutella’s breakout role came earlier this year in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Prior to that she had appeared in music videos, commercials, and smaller film projects. Still in negotiations for the role of the protagonist is Tom Cruise. Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness) is set to direct the Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) script. No details on the plot have been divulged yet.

The Mummy story was originally seen on the silver screen back in 1932, starring Boris Karloff. It has spawned numerous remakes and sequels, most famously being 1999’s The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser. The upcoming version will be the kickoff to Universal’s plan to build a cinematic universe around their classic movie monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, Van Helsing, et al. The films will all be intertwined much like Marvel is doing with its Avengers series.

Next year should be big for Boutella as she will star in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, as well as The Coldest City alongside Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and James McAvoy (Wanted).

The Mummy is set to hit theaters on March 24, 2017.
