Sam Worthington Confirms ‘Avatar’ Sequels Resume Production In February

Following the long-awaited release of Avatar: The Way Of Water, the third film in the series saw a pushback in its release, moving from December 2024 to December 2025. However, main lead Sam Worthington has confirmed that work resumes on the sequels as soon as February.

During the premiere of Netflix thriller Lift, Sam Wothington told People Magazine that “We go back to work on it in a month and it’s big.” Worthington, responsible for playing Toruk Makto himself, Jake Sully, also added “It’s bigger than you can imagine.”

While fans did have to wait 13 years between Avatar and The Way Of Water, Worthington’s comments, as well as some from director James Cameron will quench their fears of waiting too long.

According to Variety, work on Avatar 3 was already underway before The Way Of Water hit theaters. Even parts of Avatar 4 were done alongside them, so as to avoid losing age consistency with their teenage actors.

“We did the [motion capture] capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [Avatar: The Way of Water], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four,” Cameron told People Magazine. “We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three is released.”

Cameron is currently enthralled in post-production for the yet-unnamed Avatar 3, and still has the rest of the fourth installment to film. Currently, nothing has been shot for the fifth and final film in the franchise.

Avatar 3 is currently set for a release date of December 19th, 2025, followed by Avatar 4 on December 21st, 2029, and Avatar 5 on December 19th, 2031.
