Father of the Bride is seeing its third remake. This time, Andy Garcia stars in the titular role twice made famous by Spencer Tracey in 1950 and Steve Martin in 1990. The heart of the film will receive an update in the form of a large and exuberant Cuban-American family.
Garcia, who will also executive produce, shares his enthusiasm for the refreshed classic, as he gushes “I’m very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story” (via Hollywood Reporter).
The remake will likely follow the familiar and tender storyline of a father coming to terms with his daughter’s marriage as she celebratorily leaves the nest. Matt Lopez has written the screenplay that will hopefully provide a new edge to the tear-jerker in a way that proudly represents the American family as culturally rich and diverse.
Warner Bros. is set to distribute the film while Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B will produce. Gaz Alazraki, whose filmmaking credits include Netflix’s first Spanish Original series Club de Cuervos, has been selected to direct.
Andy Garcia adds Father of the Bride to a substantial list of upcoming projects for 2021 and ‘22. Premiering in 2021 is his TV drama Rebel (April 8th) and the film Big Gold Brick in which he acts alongside Oscar Isaac, Megan Fox, and Lucy Hale. What About Love, featuring the Cuban-born actor, Sharon Stone and Iain Glen is scheduled for 2022.
