James Gunn Says Yondu Will Not Be Resurrected in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

James Gunn took to twitter to respond to fan questions. It is common occurrence for the writer-director best known for his Guardians of the Galaxy films. On this installment, he confirmed that Yondu is going to (spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) stay dead.

Gunn has stated this before, but the answer the question is clear: Yondu’s death is important to audiences as well as the characters in the film. However, it is also important to note that Gunn and Michael Rooker, who played Yondu in the first two installments of the MCU franchise, are close friends and constantly collaborate.

While Yondu is dead, it is possible that Rooker can return either as another character or even as Yondu in a flashback. The first two Guardians films sees flashbacks to Peter Quill’s parents. The first opens with his mother, Meredith Quill, dying of cancer, while Quill leaves the hospital he is eventually captured by an alien ship. The second opens with Meredith Quill and Ego, Peter’s intergalactic father, enjoying a date filled with tunes, roads, and Ego’s alien plants used later in the film.

The point being, the opening flashback of volume 3 could relate to Yondu, who is Peter Quill’s guardian/parent, in someway. However, it is important to note that the opening scene would have to tie into the rest of the film, Gunn would not bring Yondu back for just a cheap flashback. It has to be informative and bring something to the story.

Whether Yondu comes back or not is not as exciting as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 heading into theaters in 2023. Until then we have James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad to look forward to, which will be released on August 6,2021, and the Guardians’ next appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder on May 6,2022. Lots and lots of superhero things to come.
