A release date has been announced for the transgender drama Three Generations starring Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Naomi Watts (While We’re Young), and Susan Sarandon (Tammy) as three generations of a family who come together as the youngest member (Fanning) makes the transition from female to male. The movie will be released in theaters September 18.
Three Generations was a big hit at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival where The Weinstein Company acquired the U.S. distribution rights for $6 million. The deal includes a 500 minimum screen commitment from The Weinstein Company, meaning the movie will play in more cities than just New York and Los Angeles.
The September release date puts the film in prime position for some early awards buzz, especially when considering the growing mainstream awareness of transgender issues, thanks in large part to the recent Diane Sawyer interview with Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner. The involvement of Watts and Sarandon, along with rising star Fanning, also adds to the film’s prestige.
Sarandon has a lot of projects coming up, including the mystery Kid Witness, which just finished filming. She’s currently shooting the comedy The Meddler with Rose Byrne (Spy) and Lucy Punch (She’s Funny That Way). Watts will return for the two-part sequel to the Divergent series, Allegiant. Fanning is the busiest of the trio though, with Nicholas Winding Refn’s (Drive) The Neon Demon, Mike Mills’ (Beginners) 20th Century Women, and Ben Affleck’s (Argo) crime drama Live By Night all scheduled to hit theaters next year.
It looks like Three Generations will raise the public profile of all three actresses when it is released in September.
