‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Release Date Officially Postponed to December

Warner Bros has officially postponed Wonder Woman 1984 once again, moving the release date to Dec. 25, 2020. After multiple delays in the past due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Warner Bros decided to rethink their plans of releasing the superhero sequel, starring Gal Gadot in the lead role, on Oct. 2, 2020.

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement to Variety, “Patty is an exceptional filmmaker, and with ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love. We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”

Director Patty Jenkins reaffirmed the decision to postpone the release date and said, “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer.”

When Wonder Woman was released in 2017, it generated over $400 million in North America. With the COVID-19 pandemic, though, the sequel would struggle to make that much again without the country’s biggest markets. Last week Tenet failed to live up to financial expectations, earning only $20 million domestically its opening weekend. Important markets like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are still closed, which only makes matters worse. Without them, it would be hard to come even close to the $400 million goal in North America.

There isn’t any word yet about the plans for Dune, which happens to now coincide with Wonder Woman 1984′s new release date from Warner Bros.
