Vanity Fair Reveals First Look at Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o & More in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

May the Fourth be with you! Today – the recently designated Star Wars Day – Vanity Fair gave fans sneak peek into photographer Annie Liebowitz’ shoot on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The magazine’s June cover features the two up-and-coming stars of the franchise, John Boyega (Attack the Block) and Daisy Ridley (also featured above on her character’s speeder), as well as two of the saga’s veteran players – Harrison Ford as Han Solo and his right hand Wookie, Chewbacca. Also present is the new rolling BB-8 droid.

The first images of Adam Driver (HBO’s Girls) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) provide the biggest reveals for the editorial. Thanks to the spread’s footnotes, we now know that Driver will be playing the Sith Lord Kylo Ren – as if his darkly-clad character photo, accoutered with a brooding attitude and storm trooper entourage didn’t give it away. He is featured below on the frozen path toward the evil First Order’s secret base.

Nyong’o takes on an entirely different kind of character, as she is featured (below right) with motion capture tracking dots in order to portray the C.G.I. alien Maz Kanata. The first image (below left) is of Gwendoline Christie’s (The Zero Theorem) Captain Phasma, A.K.A. the silver trooper of the First Order.

Also featured in the spread is Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) as Poe Dameron, an X-wing fighter pilot for the Resistance (the new name for the Rebel Alliance).

Abrams-directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters December 25. The saga will return with original cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Warwick Davis – as well as original score composer John Williams – and will also feature Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken), and Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), among others.
