‘Twilight’ Director to Head Film Adaptation of ‘Heathen’

Director Catherine Hardwicke, best known for directing the first Twilight movie and the American remake of Miss Bala, is climbing into the director’s chair of HeathenThis upcoming movie is an adaptation of comic book of the same name.

Created by writer Natasha Alterici, Heathen is a feminist fantasy series following the story of a viking warrior woman named Aydis, who is banished from her village after she’s caught kissing another woman. Aydis then embarks on an epic journey to liberate her people from the tyranny of their own god Odin.

Heathen has been praised for its feminist themes and characters, as well as its positive representation of LGBT people and queer issues. The comic is not shy about depicting same sex relationships, and  hopefully the upcoming movie adaptation will also show its characters the same respect.

Currently, no major movies based on comic books, particularly those in the MCU, have directly addressed LGBT representation. Promises have been made to include openly LGBT characters but so far the only openly gay character in the MCU is bit character who appears in Avengers: Endgame during the group therapy scene. However the Marvel Panel at San Diego Comic Con confirmed that the character of Valkyrie is bisexual.

According to Deadline, Heathen‘s script is being written by Kerry Williamson, and will be produced by Robert Kulzer, Margo Klewans, and Adrian Askarieh and F.J. DeSanto.
