Trailer Released for Aisling Walsh’s Biopic ‘Maudie’ starring Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawke

Aisling Walsh’s Canadian biopic Maudie is finally set for international release after screening in Telluride and Toronto, according to IndieWire. It will be released in the USA by Sony Picture Classics this June.

Walsh is a critically acclaimed Canadian director, whose work up until this point has been primarily on television and made for television movies, such as BBC’s Fingersmith.

The film stars celebrated actors Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke, with co-stars Kari Matchett, Zachary Bennett and Gabrielle Rose. Hawkins was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine while Hawke has been nominated for best supporting actor twice, once for Training Day and then again for Boyhood.

The film tells the story of beloved Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (Hawkins). Set in 1930s Nova Scotia, the film starts of with a desperate Lewis accepting a job working and living with a fish peddler (Hawke). During this time she begins to receive acclaim for her paintings, small depictions of outdoor settings. Her paintings were small due to rheumatoid arthritis, which only adds more rural charm to her art.
