Lionsgate has landed the licensing right to the Silk Road, a crime thriller starring Jason Clarke (The Devil All the Time) and Nick Robinson (Love, Simon). Tiller Russell (The Last Narc) wrote and directed the movie that stars Alexandra Shipp (Love, Simon), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell), Lexi Rabe (Avengers: Endgame), Darrell Britt-Gibson (Barry), Daniel Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Katie Aselton (Bombshell).
The intention is for this film is streaming and video on demand on Feb. 19, 2021, following its theatrical, digital, and VOD release; the film will then be available for purchase on Feb.23 on Blu-ray and DVD.
The film is based on a Rolling Stone story by David Kushner, Dead End On Silk Road.
Silk Road follows a young, wealthy, and highly driven entrepreneur Ross Ulbricht (Robinson), whose visionary goal is to launch the first wholly anonymous and unrestricted marketplace on the Internet. Ulbricht’s enthusiasm for the opportunities that his innovation gives the world, his platform – the Silk Road – became the world’s fastest-growing drug market, attracting the attention of dishonored DEA agent Rick Bowden (Clarke). A dinosaur with a habit for substance abuse and blowing cases, Bowden once had the street-savvy in dark corners, but he’s inexperienced for the dark web as he struggles with lessons about how to navigate the Internet. As both men’s private lives deteriorate, with Bowden over his head and Ross’ growing anxiety driving unprecedented decisions, they stick to their careers in an intricate cat-and-mouse game where both wonder how far their idealism can take them.
