‘The Power of the Dog’ and ‘Belfast’ Lead 2022 Golden Globe Nominees

Amidst the scandals and beleaguering surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2021, the 2022 Golden Globe Nominees have been announced. The 79th annual Golden Globes Awards will be held on January 9th, 2022, while the nominees were announced on Monday, December 13th. 

Leading the nominees is none other than Netflix with Power of the Dog and Focus Features’ Belfast landing a total of seven nominations and HBO’s Succession landing five. 

In the past, the Golden Globe Award was deemed one of the most esteemed in that of film and television, leading to an expression of shock and delight coming from nominees. In recent days, the HFPA has since come under fire from stars and filmmakers alike for their lack of diversity and unethical practices that led to NBC canceling the telecast in 2022. This also led to top stars and studios pledging not to work with the group until it initiates reform in all aspects of the matter. 

The HFPA came into question earlier this year after it came to light that the organization did not have one black person working for them out of almost a hundred staff members. They also accepted bribes in order to sway votes and condone unethical behavior from staff members.

Since being called out, the HFPA has diversified its ranks, updated its bylaws, restricted paid travel, banned gifts, and started undergoing significant structural change. In a letter obtained by Variety last week, the HFPA’s president, Helen Hoehne, has announced that the 2022 ceremony will focus on the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts, and despite the stars standing against the HFPA, she has still invited nominees to participate in the event. However, since these allegations still hang over the HFPA, the 2022 Golden Globes will look different than years past, but the president still hopes for the organization to become better and called 2021 “a year of change and reflection” for the group. 

The Golden Globes themselves were once seen as a marker for the Oscars, but since the poor reflection of the group, that has changed. In a sign of their diminishing reputation and struggle to stay relevant, the Critics Choice Association announced its nominees just hours before the HFPA, something that would have been unthinkable in years past. 

Apple TV received television nominations for Ted Lasso and The Morning Show each earning four nominations apiece. Apple TV also received a nomination for CODA in the best drama category. Netflix received 17 nominations for The Power of the Dog, and Belfast on the film front, nominated alongside Dune and King Richard for best drama.  Don’t Look Up and Tick, Tick … Boom! will vie between West Side Story, Licorice Pizza, and Cyrano for best comedy or musical.
