Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light. The movie follows the country singer’s rise to fame and the tragic effects it had on his health and personal life. His alcoholism eventually led to his death at 29.
Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) was announced as the project’s lead last summer. Elizabeth Olsen (Godzilla), Bradley Whitford (Cabin in the Woods), David Krumholtz (Serenity), and Cherry Jones (The Beaver) are also in the movie.
Musical biopics were all the rage back in the mid-2000s, with Ray and Walk the Line winning multiple awards. Sony appears to be banking on that genre coming back, and their bet will likely depend on Hiddleston’s performance.
The actor, who played Loki in the Thor and Avengers films, is popular with both fans and critics. He’s also garnered praise for his work in movies like Midnight in Paris, Only Lovers Left Alive, and The Deep Blue Sea. Coming up, Hiddleston is set to star in Kong: Skull Island and Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak.
I Saw the Light is directed by Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius) and is currently in post-production, though no release date has been announced.
