In what’s shaping up to be one of the more talked about titles in the ongoing Sundance Film Festival, The One I Love, a romantic comedy/drama wrapped in a mystery, was sold to Radius, the multi-platform arm of The Weinstein Company for worldwide rights. The film stars Mark Duplass (Zero Dark Thirty, Your Sister’s Sister) and Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men) as a married couple on the outs who go on a weekend getaway in an attempt to revitalize their relationship but discover something unusual lies afoot.The reviews and commentary of the film have been quick to note that a central twist motivates the actions in The One I Love, something that’s made it difficult to write about and poses dangers for Radius when they market the film sometime later this year. First-time director Charlie McDowell and screenwriter Justin Lader premiered the film to wide acclaim at the Park City festival. Ted Danson, McDowell’s step-father, co-stars as the couple’s therapist.
Variety‘s Geoff Berkshire wrote in his rave review that The One I Love is “a pleasure to watch but challenge to discuss without spoiling a good deal of the fun, The One I Love marries Mark Duplass’ skill for incisive relationship comedies with a high concept any Hollywood studio would covet. Boasting spectacular performances from Duplass and Elisabeth Moss as a husband and wife on the brink of separation, this incredibly assured directorial debut of Charlie McDowell essentially turns the idea of a two-hander upside down and inside out. Such a smart, crowd-pleasing entertainment deserves a distrib savvy enough to navigate a release without giving away the central twist of the premise in the marketing.”
Whatever the case, this might be a real grab for Radius, who will release the film theatrically and through other platforms.
