Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Joe Cole Star in Netflix’s ‘Against The Ice’

Netflix announced Tuesday that Emmy Award nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and BAFTA nominee Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) would star in the feature film Against The Ice. Directed by awarding-winning Danish director Peter Flinth (Beatles) and produced by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest). The film is set to be released on the streamer in 2021.

This entire film was being kept under wraps and just finished shooting in Iceland and Greenland, according to Deadline.

Against The Ice was adapted by Coster-Waldau and Joe Derrick from a Danish novel Two Against The Ice written by Ejnar Mikkelsen.

In 1909, Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen (Coster-Waldau) led Denmark’s Alabama Expedition, who attempted to refute the claim of the United States to North-Eastern Greenland. A claim rooted in the belief that Greenland has been divided into two separate pieces of land—leaving their crew behind with the ship, Mikkelsen sleds through the ice with his novice crew member Iver Iversen (Cole).

The two men succeed in discovering the evidence they needed to prove that Greenland is indeed one island, but it takes longer to return to the ship and much harder than they had anticipated. Fighting against intense hunger, exhaustion, and a polar bear attack, they eventually get back to their ship only to find it crushed beneath the ice and the camp deserted.

The cast also includes Charles Dance (The Crown) and Heida Reed (Poldark).

Coster-Waldau said, “Against The Ice has been a passion project for me from the very beginning. It combines a lot of themes that excite me: adventure, Greenland, companionship, loyalty, and love. It is an intense exploration of two men, two opposites, trapped in an epic, dangerous setting.”
