New Trailer and ‘Star Wars’ Style Poster Drop for ‘Magic Mike XXL’

The new teaser for Magic Mike XXL, the Channing Tatum-led male exotic dancer sequel, has new teaser that gives fans a first look into the film’s plot and characters. While the first teaser was essentially a sizzle reel set to Genuwine’s “Pony”, this next trailer, courtesy of Good Morning America, sets the story’s context.

As the trailer reveals, the sequel’s story will again center on Magic Mike (Tatum) as he leaves retirement to rejoin his Kings of Tampa crew, comprised of returning actors Joe Maganiello (HBO’s True Blood), Matt Bomer (A Normal Heart), Kevin Nash (John Wick), and Adam Rodriguez (About Last Night). The dancers come together for big performance at a convention in Myrtle Beach. The sequel has also made room for plenty of newcomers, including Donald Glover (TV’s Community), Amber Heard (Drive Angry), Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day), Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix Reloaded), Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect), and former NFL star Michael Strahan (TV’s Live With Kelly & Michael).

In a similar vein as the Step Up dance franchise – also a Tatum-launched series – the MM sequel looks to be ditching a lot of the character and story elements of the first film in favor of fan service (i.e. focusing on the build up to a competition which then leads to gratuitous dancing and much shirtlessness).

In anticipation of the teaser, Warner Bros. released a new poster for the film on Star Wars Day (May 4th), promoting Magic Mike XXL as a saga-esque sequel. Paying homage to many Star Wars posters of the past, the men and woman (Pinkett Smith) of the film are featured sending their dance action poses into the far reaches of a disco ball-created galaxy.

Magic Mike XXL hits theaters July 1st.
