Sir Ian McKellan (X-Men) has played many iconic roles throughout his prestigious career and has now set his sights on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes in Bill Condon‘s (Dreamgirls) new film Mr. Holmes.
This latest trailer gives audiences a bit more insight into the kind of mystery Mr. Holmes will be taking on – a cold case that was never solved. Stripped away from the usual embellishments of Sherlock Holmes, this version looks to set the record straight on the character without the deerstalker hat and pipe. The story follows Holmes working out a mystery about a man who wants to investigate his wife. In following her, Holmes discovers a series of mysterious circumstances that point to her having murderous intentions for her husband. Now Holmes takes to the case once again hoping to find closure and to rewrite the Sherlock that has been created on screen.
Within the past decade Sherlock Holmes has been brought back to the forefront of pop culture. On TV, Holmes can be seen in Elementary, where a modern Sherlock – played by Jonny Lee Miller (Dark Shadows) – lives in New York and solves crimes with a Ms. Watson played by Lucy Liu (Kill Bill: Vol. 1). Then there is Sherlock, which set in modern day London with Holmes being a high-functioning sociopath played by Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Watson as his sarcastic blogging companion, played by Martin Freeman (The Hobbit). The only renditions that try to keep to the time period of the books are the films with Robert Downey Jr. (Ironman) as Holmes and Jude Law (The Holiday) as Watson.
With so many versions of Sherlock around it’s hard to break open a new version, but Mr. Holmes is just that. This is a much older version of Holmes than audiences have seen, and while this Holmes is very clever, he will not have the characters’ iconic ability to know the impossible, such as the exact location of where a roll was bought just on its smell and etc. Mr. Holmes seems to instead be more of a traditional detective mystery and the detective just happens to be Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
