It was first revealed that DC’s Static Shock was in development during the DC FanDome event in August by Reginald Hudlin. That was a far as the information went about the development of the movie. Friday, it was announced that Michael B. Jordan would join Hudlin in producing the feature project. Jordan will produce the project through his Warner based banner Outlier Society.
The star power of Jordan just jumped the production of the film up a few kilowatts. Given how little development has been happening with the film, it now has some firepower.
Static, aka Virgil Hawkins, was created by Milestone Media and DC Comics in the 1990s. The character is about a teen who transforms into a superhero with electromagnetic powers. An animated series Static Shock aired on Kids’ WB in the early 2000s and, in that time, was one of the few superhero series starring a Black character.
“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around Black superheroes; our community deserves that,” Jordan said in a statement. “Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms, and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros. on this initial step.”
Hudlin is writing an all-new Static Shock digital comic series beginning in Feb. 2021 and a graphic novel with art by Kyle Baker.
