Deadline has exclusively learned that Solstice Studios is pulling Mark Wahlberg’s drama Joe Bell off the theatrical release calendar temporarily and has plans for a new release date later this year. The original release date was set for Feb. 19, 2021.
Based on a true story about a small-town working-class father (Wahlberg) who, after his gay teenage son, Jadin (Reid Miller), has been tormented in high school. He embarks on a solitary walk around the U.S. from Oregon to New York City to deliver a simple message of tolerance from a father’s perspective, hoping to reach out to others who may be open to hearing from someone like themselves. Faced with a lot of challenges, Joe finally teaches us that all you can do to make a difference is if you only take on the actions one at a time.
The domestic box office in the U.S. continues to struggle to make money as the rise in COVID-19 cases grows. Huge film districts like Los Angeles and New York are still closed, and without them, it will be harder to keep movie theaters from gaining money to keep their doors open. AMC was one of the first theaters that announced that if they couldn’t get people to come to the theaters, they would have to call bankruptcy. This morning news broke out that AMC, the No. 1 film chain, has gained additional financing to avoid bankruptcy.
Maybe there is a silver lining after all during this pandemic for the film industry? We sure hope so!
