The hit PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima is getting film adaptation, and it looks like Chad Stahelski, the director of the first three John Wick films, will be directing. It’s hard to imagine a better filmmaker today that could reimagine the action-packed samurai game in live-action.
The game follows Jin Sakai, a samurai on a quest to protect Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. It was a critical and commercial success for Sucker Punch Productions, the developers of the game, selling 6.5 million copies since its release in July 2020.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen,” said Head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash in a statement to Deadline. “We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”
Ghost of Tsushima is one of several PlayStation exclusive franchises getting live-action adaptations. The Uncharted film, which has Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg starring, just recently wrapped production, and HBO is working on a live-action series based on The Last of Us, which is being executive produced by Chernobyl and Game of Thrones veterans Craig Mazin and Carolyn Strauss.
Stahelski is currently working on the fourth film in the John Wick franchise, which is set to release May 27, 2022. The extremely successful trilogy of films have quickly made Keanu Reeves’ title character one of the biggest names in action movie history.
