Variety reports that a biopic is in the works about former football star Ricky Williams.
Ricky Williams in Australia will chronicle the life and year of his sabbatical in Australia. Modern Magic co-founder and Academy Award-winner Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) will direct and produce the film with Adam Rosenberg for Modern Magic. Williams will also co-write the film. Variety confirmed the biopic news firsthand.
Williams rose to prominence at the University of Texas, where he played as a standout running back. He was a two-time All-American at Texas, where he also won the 1998 Heisman Trophy and established the all-time collegiate running record. He played in the NFL for 11 seasons, and many of those seasons were spent with the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, his time in the league was cut short when Williams left the game during his prime. Williams suffered from social anxiety disorder off the field, and he regularly gave interviews while wearing his helmet.
“Fifteen years ago, I read about a Heisman trophy-winning NFL player named Ricky Williams who’d abruptly quit the pros in his prime and vanished,” Rothman said about the project.
Rothman added: “Nobody knew where he was. Nobody knew how to find him. Months later, he was discovered living in a tent in a backpacker’s commune in Byron Bay, Australia, undergoing a strange and transformative experience. He’s a special person, and I’m honored he trusts me to help tell the story of his moving, funny, one-of-a-kind journey involving Buddha, Kali, Jesus, Marley, football, parenthood, Julie Andrews, Lenny Kravitz and everything in between.”
In addition, Modern Magic’s upcoming project is an original animated feature inspired by the music of late rapper Juice WRLD.
