CinemaCon commenced this week in Las Vegas with big Spider-Verse announcements and first looks, including the first 15 minutes of the highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller took the stage to introduce this preview and had plenty more to tease about the upcoming film.
On stage at CinemaCon, Lord said, “We had to try and break new ground, so it’s way bigger. The number of characters [is massive]. The first movie has 40. This one has 240 characters.” The pair also mentioned that the film has a crew of over 1,000 people and is the biggest animated film crew to date. They also revealed that the film begins on Spider-Gwen’s (Hailee Steinfeld) Earth-65 before continuing onto Earth-1610, where Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) lives.
Comicbook.com’s source Cameron Bonomolo was in attendance and described the footage in full. The clip features a fight between Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and legacy comic-book villain Vulture. Gwen is shortly joined by Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099) and the pregnant Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), who help her in the fight and all work together to save a fallen helicopter. On the ground, Gwen is cornered and arrested by her father for the murder of Peter Parker until Miguel temporarily delays Captain Stacy and gives Gwen the chance to change universes. The decision is left open-ended, and the film jumps back to Earth 1610 to catch up with Miles, who is already running late. He mentions his goal of attending Columbia University for their physics program, but the clip leaves off with his parents seemingly knowing his spidery secret.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson with a script penned by Miller, Phil Lord, and David Callaham. The film will again star Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson, along with Oscar Isaac and Issa Rae, and will open in theaters next summer on June 2, 2023.
