Bad Bunny Set to Star in First Marvel Film About a Latino Superhero ‘El Muerto’

On Monday at CinemaCon 2022, Sony announced that a Spiderman spin-off film entitled El Muerto is in the making, but that’s not the only news the studio brought with them. In the leading role, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny has been cast. The titular hero first appeared in Marvel Comics back in 2006 but has only occurred a few times in the comic universe.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not going to be the musician’s first role on the silver screen. He has also been linked to the Fast and Furious 9, Bullet Train (coming to theaters in 2022), and American Sole.

But El Muerto will not only be important for Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny, as his first lead role, but this film will be the first-ever live-action Marvel film about Latin hero and the historic first time a Latin actor will star in a leading role within Marvel Studios.

The casting of Bad Bunny in the film is a huge leap for diversity in the legendary Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hopefully, this will bring a much-needed positive representation of the Latino community on screen and give young Latinos the chance to see someone with a similar heritage in the main role.

El Muerto is scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 12, 2024.
