Disney Announces Nine Live Action Films Including ‘Maleficent 2’ and ‘The Jungle Book 2’

Disney has just announced colossal line up of live action movies, mainly based off of their animated classics. The pictures include sequels to their previously established live actions films Maleficent and The Jungle Book (now in theaters). The other new additions are as follows: Cruella, a spin off of 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone as Cruella DeVille, Dumbo with director Tim Burton, Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson, A Wrinkle in Time directed by Ava DuVernay, sequel to Mary Poppins directed by Rob Marshall and starring Emily Blunt, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with director Lasse Hallstrom, and A Tinker Bell project with Reese Witherspoon set to star.

The dates claimed by Disney for these films are July 28, 2017; April 6, 2018; Aug. 3, 2018; Dec. 25, 2018; and Dec. 20, 2019. That’s on top of the two dates the studio has already claimed for untitled live-action fairy tales — Nov. 2, 2018, and Nov. 8, 2019 — meaning there will be four such films in 2018 alone.

Studio insiders say one of the release dates announced Monday will go to The Jungle Book 2, which is already in the works, even as Warner Bros. preps its own for Oct. 19, 2018. Disney won’t comment, but it’s possible Jon Favreau‘s sequel could be ready in time for the August or November 2018 slot, putting it in the direct path of the rival Jungle Book: Origins, directed by the motion capture king Andy Serkis. The Jungle Book has earned $533 million in two weeks at the global box office, essentially establishing Disney’s dominance in the live action family film market.

As for the rest of the films, we’ll keep you updated as Disney attaches the films to their respective dates.
