According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct Charlie’s Angels reboot after successfully steering her directorial feature debut, Pitch Perfect 2 to a near $200 million in box office receipts this summer. Also an actress known for her comedic flair (Hunger Games franchise, Magic Mike XXL, The LEGO Movie) and dramatic gifts (Love and Mercy), Banks is among a minority of female Hollywood directors today.
Charlie’s Angels was a hit television series in the 1970s which, along with her iconic one-piece swimsuit poster, propelled one of its stars- the late Farrah Fawcett to international fame. Originally, Fawcett along wide Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson played detectives who solved crimes for a mysterious off-camera boss named Charlie. A 2000 movie version of Charlie’s Angels starring Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore, and Cameron Diaz was a hit, and it was followed in 2003 by a sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Both films were directed by McG (Terminator: Salvation).
Sony is now rebooting the franchise and is currently negotiating with Banks to direct as well as to produce along with her husband Max Handelman. The next task will be bringing on a writer and actors. Banks is currently attached to direct the YA adaptation The Red Queen over at Universal and will likely continue serve as producer on the planned Pitch Perfect 3, however no director is set currently for the third film. Banks will next be seen on screens in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. The final chapter is due in theaters on November 20th.
