After weeks of speculation, Warner Bros. stated last month that Austin Butler had won the coveted role of Elvis Presley in the new Baz Luhrmann biopic on the King of Rock and Roll’s life. It was just announced that the film’s release has been set for October 1st, 2021.
Austin Butler, who just appeared in this year’s The Dead Don’t Die and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, beat out fan-favorite casting choices like Ansel Elgort, and Miles Teller and Harry Styles (One Direction, Dunkirk) for the role of Elvis. Besides Butler, the only other known actor in the film is Tom Hanks, who will be playing Elvis’ manager Col. Tom Parker.
Baz Luhrmann’s last feature film was 2013’s The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Since then, he briefly directed Netflix’s series The Get Down, which was canceled after its first season. Filming for the Elvis biopic is expected to start at the beginning of 2020.
A cost of the biopic’s release date announcement was a slight push for Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming remake of Dune starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Zendaya. Dune‘s release date has been moved from November 20, 2020 to December 18, 2020 and, as a result, will now have to compete alongside Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated West Side Story remake, ironically starring Ansel Elgort.
