Jim Carrey Speaks Out on ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Redesign

One of the biggest elements to take away from the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, besides its titular character’s controversial design, is who they cast as the main villain. Iconic comedian Jim Carrey’s casting as Dr. Robotnik (i.e. Dr. Eggman) certainly made Sonic fans intrigued at best for the  upcoming project. Luckily Carrey’s performance was deemed as one of the highlights of an otherwise poorly received trailer. The trailer’s backlash prompted director Jeff Fowler to delay his live action video game adaptation to February 2020 in order to fix Sonic’s design.

During a recent interview with IGN for his Showtime series Kidding, Jim Carrey was asked about his thoughts on the film getting delayed. Carrey described it as being a bit out of control, given the idea of audiences having a say on the film product as it’s in development. The actor certainly understands that people have a strong childhood connection with Sonic, so they deem themselves entitled to a sense of ownership over the property. However he also described it as more of a bandwagon thing  by saying, “Sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something, and then when it get it, it goes, ‘Okay. I just wanted it. I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon’ or whatever.”

Carrey’s statement could imply that the redesign might not fully change people’s thoughts on Sonic the Hedgehog, suggesting they were ragging on the trailer for fun rather than out of genuine concern for the character. There’s still a good amount of time before the film’s official release so, when the next trailer comes out with the updated design, it’ll likely play a deciding factor on whether people will still care about the Sonic movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release on February 14 2020.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
