The Odyssey will officially become Universal Studios’ Highest-Grossing Movie by the end of the weekend. By the end of this weekend, the film will reach $1.684 billion, making it the studio’s highest-grossing film. This total surpasses the studio’s previous record holder, Jurassic World, which made $1.677 billion in 2015. In addition, the film will become the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time by the end of this weekend, behind Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Disney’s Zootopia 2.
This is yet another box office milestone The Odyssey has reached. The film is already the highest-grossing movie by director Christopher Nolan; the highest-grossing R-rated feature film, surpassing the previous record holder, Deadpool & Wolverine; and the first original/non-IP film to gross $1 billion internationally since 2009. The film has also become the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time, making over $464 million worldwide in IMAX sales, and is the second highest-grossing film of this year behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
In response to becoming the highest-grossing Universal film, Donna Langley, Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, has provided the following statement:
“What Chris and Emma [Thomas] have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history. A generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself.”
Audiences can still experience The Odyssey in theaters, including in IMAX 70mm, as IMAX 70mm showings have been extended until September 30th.
