Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the film had officially earned a collective worldwide box office total of $1.352 billion.
With that total, Nolan’s epic officially surpassed the previous record holder, 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.338 billion worldwide. This news comes shortly after the film hit another box office milestone, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises as Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film.
To commemorate The Odyssey surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds took to social media to post a congratulatory message. The post includes a clip from Deadpool & Wolverine in which the two titular characters fight each other inside a Honda Odyssey minivan, in what fans consider one of the film’s most memorable action scenes. The post’s caption reads as follows
“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car.”
Other box office milestones the film has hit include becoming the highest-grossing IMAX release, a feat attributed to the fact that the film made history as the first feature filmed entirely with IMAX film cameras, leading to a high demand in IMAX 70mm screenings. In addition, the film, along with even larger box office successes such as Toy Story 5 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, helped drive a $4.24 billion domestic box office total for the summer season.
