‘Barbie’ Brings In A Staggering $155M Domestic, ‘Oppenheimer’ Brings $77M Domestic

The fabled Barbenheimer weekend is finally upon us. Barbie, from director Greta Gerwig, and Oppenheimer, from Christopher Nolan, have been released opposite each other, and to staggering numbers, domestically and overseas.

As far as Barbie goes, the film pulled in $70.5 million on its opening day, including $22.3 million in preview shows, according to Hollywood Reporter. The film was estimated to round out the weekend with whopping $155 million domestically, looking to take home a staggering $300 million worldwide in its first weekend, opening to 69 markets overseas. As Deadline reports, its best international day was Friday, pulling in $43 million.

From the UK, Barbie brought in $8.3 million for its opening day, making it the best opening since the pandemic, and the third best for Warner Bros., behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Batman V Superman. It also scored the best opening for a WB film ever in Poland.

On the Oppenheimer side of matters, it scored $33 million domestically on Friday, sending it well to a $77 million domestic opening for the whole weekend. This would rank it as third best opening for a Nolan film, following The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million). It would also place it at the third-best opening for a biographical picture, behind American Sniper ($89.3 million) and Passion Of The Christ ($83.8 million).

Overseas, Nolan’s Oppenheimer is on track to an $88.9 opening. It was the biggest launch for a Nolan film in 33 markets and even pulled in $4.2 million in the UK, 14% higher than that of Dunkirk. Based on this, Oppenheimer looks to earn a worldwide weekend total of $165.9 million.

This will mark the first 3-day weekend in film history to see two movies gross $100 million and $50 million.
