Antoine Fuqua’s “Scarface” Remake At Universal Could Happen

Antoine Fuqua is popular name in Hollywood right now. Fuqua has shown brilliance each time in the director’s chair and his next film, The Magnificent Seven has the honor of being the Gala Opening Night Film of the Toronto Film Festival and closing film for The 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Deadline reports Fuqua is in talks with Universal to direct re-imagining of one of their classics, Scarface. If all goes well, this will be the third iteration Universal has of their crime thriller classic. That’s right, three Tony Montana’s; 1932’s Paul Muni and who could forget Al Pacino’s take in 1983.

A lot of questions will be raised as to who will portray our beloved Mr. Montana, but for now, sources say this contemporary version of the story will take place in Los Angeles. Latest drafts of the film have been making their rounds and Jonathan Herman delivered the most recent, but previous drafts have been penned by the likes of Paul Attanasio and David Ayer.

It goes without saying, Fuqua is completely capable of taking on a film such as this due to the source material. Fuqua’s familiarity with crime thrillers is impressive and include Training Day, The Equalizer, and the upcoming The Magnificent Seven. As a priority at Universal, Fuqua seems to be the best bet.

Finger’s crossed, this re-imagining of Scarface is still some time away, but in the meantime, keep an eye out for Fuqua’s latest, The Magnificent Seven which hits theaters September 23rd. Of course, the film stars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, two actors whose familiar faces tend to pop up in Fuqua’s films. Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett, and Peter Sarsgaard are also set to star.
