A Female Rapper from Jersey Seeks Stardom in the Official ‘Patti Cake$’ Trailer

It took Sundance by storm back in February when it premiered to adoring audiences and left with a major distribution deal by Fox Searchlight. Patti Cake$ is the feature debut of acclaimed music video director Geremy Jasper (Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over”, Selena Gomez’s “Love You Like a Love Song”). He both wrote and directed the film, and his visual style is apparent throughout the its first trailer.

Patti Cake$ is all at once flashy and understated in telling the story of New Jersey rapper, “Killa P”, as she goes from neighborhood underdog and unemployed artist, to a one-of-a-kind talent in the local rap culture.

The film stars newcomer Danielle MacDonald, in what looks to be a breakout role. The cast also include Bridget Everett, Cathy Moriarty, Siddarth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, McCaul Lombardi, Sahr Ngaujah, Wass Stevens, and MC Lyte.

Fox Searchlight has not yet set the release date for the film, but plan to have it in theaters by this summer. Check out the trailer and official one-sheet below.
