Angelina Jolie-Produced Animated Film ‘The Breadwinner’ Debuts First Trailer

From GKIDS and Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, the Academy Award nominated team behind The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, comes the first teaser trailer for what is sure to be their next Oscar nominated effort, The Breadwinner.

Based on the novel by Deborah Ellis, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, The Breadwinner is directed by Nora Twomey and tells the story of Parvana, a young Afghan girl living under the rule of the Taliban. After the Taliban imprison her father, she disguises herself as a boy to provide for her hungry family. The film’s producers say that The Breadwinner, “celebrates the culture, history and beauty of Afghanistan with a cast that includes many performers of Afghan descent.”

Along with the film’s debut trailer, Angelina Jolie, who serves as the film’s executive producer, spoke highly of the production and her joy of being a part of it, “I am proud to be a part of this beautiful film with this timely and very important subject matter. Millions of girls around the world have to grow up before their time, working to provide for their families at a very young age and in difficult circumstances. They have the strength to do what no one should ask little girls to do. I hope this film is able to bring this discussion to a broader audience. As much as it is an important and very meaningful film, it also stands on its own as a great piece of art. Director Nora Twomey and her team have done something very special. They have breathed life into the characters and paid respect to the subject matter and to a country where women often struggle.”

The Breadwinner is slated for a North American theatrical release this Fall.

Austin Allison: Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, I have been obsessed with cartoons, animation, and film in general for as long as I've known how to talk and draw. From Disney animation to indie movies, filmmaking was always the purest form of art to me. I majored in Film and Television Studies and minored in Studio Art at the University of Arizona. The greatest aspect of studying film was developing a creative and critical eye for a medium that I had loved for so long, but couldn't explain why I loved it until now.
