‘Wolverine 3’ Updates: Title Confirmed; New Images Double Down on R-Rating

The massive success of Deadpool surely appears to be liberating Fox’s continuation of the X-Men brand. The anarchic, hard R-rated comic book adaptation looks to further extend more grown-up aesthetic to the brand as the latest Wolverine title gears up its marketing presence. The film – likely Hugh Jackman‘s last outing as the clawed superhero – on the surface, appears to be the grittiest of the franchise to date. Director James Mangold (Walk the Line) released new images from the title to underline this assertion the film, now simply titled Logan.

In a comment published in The Hollywood Reporter, Mangold said of the film:

Basically, if you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG f–kathon, this ain’t your movie. In this flick, people get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy, like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.

While the plot is still largely unknown, Logan appears to find an aging Wolverine coming to grips with pain diminished healing strength. Jackman, who has been with the X-Men franchise since the first Bryan Singer filmed version in 2000, returns as does Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier. Narcos co-star Boyd Holbrook joins the franchise, set as one of the film’s chief villains. Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is New Black), Doris Morgado (2 Guns), Stephen Merchant (Hello Ladies) and Richard E. Grant (Jackie) round out the cast. Mangold directs from a screenplay by Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049) and David James Kelly.

Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
