‘The Fall Guy’ Wins The First Weekend Of The Summer Movie Season With $28 Million Domestically

The summer movie season is officially underway. The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch, is set to climb to the top spot in the first weekend. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, The Fall Guy follows a prolific stuntman turned unlikely hero after the main star of the film he’s working on suddenly disappears.

So far, The Fall Guy is looking to stick a landing around $28 million come the weekend’s close, including about $10.4 million on Friday, but accounting for worldwide gross, it’ll take home $65.4 million. The reported budget of the film is $130 million.

As Hollywood Reporter notes, the gross for The Fall Guy is down compared to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, which debuted last year around this time and commenced the summer movie season. The opening for that film was $118.4 million.

Falling to second place this weekend is Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers. Challengers is looking to take home about $8.7 million over the weekend, continuing the film on a steady track to recoup its reported $55 million budget.

Third place this weekend belongs to Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace, with its re-release coinciding with both Star Wars Day and the 25th anniversary of the film. The first in the prequel trilogy, The Phantom Menace follows Qui-Gon Jinn with his apprentice, a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, as they come across a young boy on the planet Tatooine, who is unusually strong with the Force. Over the weekend, Phantom Menace will bring in $7.2 million in its re-release, adding to its existing total of over $1 billion.

Fourth place this weekend goes to Tarot with $6.25 million, while fifth goes to Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, still holding on to the top five with $187.7 million.
