With the circus revolving around the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nearly over, it’s time to go back to work. Director Zack Snyder and his DC Comics cohorts started shooting their Avengers-style Justice League last week. Now words has come, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, that Willem Dafoe has joined the cast in an unspecified role. Dafoe, a veteran actor who has earned two Academy Award nominations, throughout his career, famously portrayed the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002). The actor is jumping ship from Marvel to DC.
Justice League, an upcoming two-part film (both of which will be helmed by Snyder), finds the DC crime-fighting attempting to combat a powerful supervillain, one who is stronger than each member’s capabilities. Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) will all be in action for this event-sized movie. The villain who they will be attempting to defeat has not been confirmed yet, though many believe DC baddie Darkseid may be the main foe as he was teased briefly in Batman v Superman. Outside of our cast of superheros, it was previously announced that Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) would be joining Justice League as Commissioner Gordon. Oscar winner Chris Terrio (Argo) penned the screenplay.
Dafoe recently appeared on screen in the cult hit John Wick opposite Keanu Reeves. Coming up, the actor will appear in Dog Eat Dog, a new crime drama from filmmaker Paul Schrader (Affliction) starring Nicolas Cage which will be showcased in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Dafoe will also soon appear in The Great Wall, an new epic from acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero) starring Matt Damon (The Martian). Justice League: Part One is set to hit theaters on November 17. 2017, while Justice League: Part Two follows on June 19, 2019.
