The legendary director-actor-writer Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn, Grizzly Man) has done every type of film imaginable, and does so with such an idiosyncratic style that he goes unmatched to even some of the biggest Hollywood filmmakers. While every film he produces isn’t a masterpiece, he manages to stay both prolific and genuinely creative at the same time. One of his most recent works, Queen of the Desert, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015 and a new trailer has just been released.
It tells the the true story about Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman), British woman who was just as much a jack-of-all trades as Herzog is; she was a writer, traveler, archeologist, and more, for the Empire. But this film seems to mainly show her times spent in Africa, possibly Morocco or Jordan. The film also stars Robert Pattinson (Twilight) as T.E. Lawrence, James Franco (127 Hours), and Damian Lewis (Homeland). By the footage given so far, this latest film by the director doesn’t seem to be overly stylized or heavy in Herzog’s aesthetic, but rather more classic like that of Lawrence of Arabia.
The film picked up much less than terrific reviews after its festival premieres at Berlinale and AFI. It would be unlikely for this to become an awards contender, however, it will still pick up a following from film aficionados familiar with Herzog. A US release date still has not been set, but we will keep you updated once that information becomes available.
