Capone, directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and starring Tom Hardy as the titular historic mobster, will be available for streaming online instead of waiting for theaters to reopen. The film’s distributor, Vertical Entertainment, will have Capone ready for on demand viewing on May 12, 2020.
Capone was originally was entitled Fonzo, a nickname based on Capone’s shortened first name Alphonse. Hardy was announced to play Capone back in 2016, but production of the film was held back by Hardy’s involvement in Venom (2018), with filming finally beginning in April of 2018. Trank, seeming very excited about it, posted a trailer to his Twitter account:
Capone focuses on the main character’s time in the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as his battle with several health issues, including the dementia that was brought on by syphilis. The gangster is haunted by the violence of his past. Hardy plays Capone at the age of 47 and since Al Capone historically died at 48, this film will be focusing on the last year of his life, hinting to a more somber, existential tone rather than an action-packed crime adventure.
Alongside Hardy, the cast includes Linda Cardellini as Al Capone’s wife Mae, Jack Lowden, Matt Dillon, Noel Fisher, Kyle MacLachlan, and Kathrine Narducci.
