‘To All The Boys’ Writer Sofia Alvarez Set to Direct and Write Netflix Adaptation of Sarah Dessen Novel ‘Along For The Ride’

Ohh, some exciting news for Sarah Dessen fans! It’s been a while since fans got to see their favorite book from the author being turned into a movie. The screenwriter behind the Netflix hits To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, Sofia Alvarez is teaming back up again with Netflix to direct and write the film adaptation of Dessen’s New York Times bestselling YA novel Along for the Ride. The film will also be Alvarez’s directorial debut, Deadline announced.

Along for the Ride centers on Auden (Emma Pasarow, Am I OK?), who encounters the enigmatic Eli (Belmont Cameli, Saved by the Bell), a fellow insomniac the summer before college. As the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two begin nightly adventures to help Auden live the carefree, fun-loving teen life she never thought she wanted before.

Kate Bosworth (Wild Indian), Laura Kariuki (Black Lightning), Andie MacDowell (Ready or Not), Dermot Mulroney (Deadly Illusions), Genevieve Hannelius (Dog with a Blog), Samia Finnerty (Gotham), Paul Karmiryan (Veronica Mars), Marcus Scribner (Black-ish) and Ricardo Hurtado (Malibu Rescue).

In 2003 Dessen’s novels Someone like You and That Summer became the movie How to Deal that starred Mandy Moore, Trent Ford, Allison Janney, and Peter Gallagher. How to Deal, follows teenager Halley Martin, who is disillusioned by love gone wrong, but when she meets Macon Forrester together, they learn a lesson about love. How to Deal can be seen on the free streaming service Tubi.

Netflix has also optioned Dessen’s other YA novels, including This Lullaby, Once and For All, and the latest to be optioned by Netflix The Truth About Forever.
