Nine days away from its first announced release date, The Weinstein Co. has put period Tulip Fever on the back burner, delaying the movie’s release seven months. The film – which stars recent Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Christoph Waltz (Big Eyes) and Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings) – is now slated to open on February 24, 2017.
Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) directed the period romance based on Deborah Moggach’s novel. The story centers around an artist (DeHaan) who is commissioned to paint a portrait of a married woman (Vikander) by her husband (Waltz) during the tulip mania of 17th century Amsterdam. The artist eventually falls for the married woman. Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad), Holliday Grainger (The Finest Hours), Jack O’Connell (Money Monster) and Oscar winner Judi Dench (Skyfall) co-star. Oscar winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) penned the screenplay.
The long-gestating project was actually completed over a year ago and was original scheduled to hit theaters next week on July 15th. The Weinstein Co. didn’t extend a reason for the delay, yet it’s telling that their 2016 slate is slimmer than usual with only three more titles expected to hit theaters this year – The Founder starring Michael Keaton (releasing on August 5th), boxing drama Hands of Stone (releasing August 26th) and Lion (due this Thanksgiving).
