As Variety reports, Amazon Studios and Skydance are already speaking of producing sequel to the time-traveling alien invasion pic The Tomorrow War. The thriller premiered on Amazon Prime Video just last week, and though Amazon has not made any viewership numbers public, it is exciting to hear that a sequel is already in the works.
The current production plan is for director Chris McKay, screenwriter Zach Dean, and stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Sam Richardson, Betty Gilpin, Edwin Hodge, and J.K. Simmons to all return, but no concrete cast deals have been made yet.
The Tomorrow War was originally going to open in theaters from Paramount Pictures, but challenges from the pandemic ultimately made the studio sell the film to Amazon, as Variety reported exclusively. After the debut, various third-party viewership companies reported high ratings for the movie.

In The Tomorrow War, Pratt and Richardson play Dan and Charlie, who travel among a group of drafted civilians 30 years into the future to help fight a war against ravenous aliens called White Spikes. In the future, Dan meets his grown-up daughter, Muri (Strahovski), who is able to develop a poison that could wipe out the aliens. When Dan returns to present day, he takes the poison with him. He and Charlie eventually locate the buried alien ship containing the original White Spikes on Earth, which crashed at least 1,000 years earlier, in the Russian Arctic. Dan’s estranged father, Dan, Charlie, and a small group of volunteer soldiers discover the ship and realize the pilots were intelligent beings and the White Spikes were just cargo. They destroy the ship and kill all the aliens inside, presumably ending the war before it started.
A sequel suggests that, perhaps, the threat isn’t over just yet. In an interview with Variety, McKay talks about how eager he is to return to this world and explore deeper into where the White Spikes came from:
“I think that a sequel could go in a lot of fun areas and the ethnographic study of the White Spikes in their world and where they came from, and what their purpose was, and all of that kind of thing. So yeah, I think that could be a lot of fun. And with this cast, too, we’re just getting started.”
