‘The New Mutants’ – Details Emerge on ‘X-Men’ Spin-Off; Rosario Dawson in Talks to Join Cast

This summer, Fox is slated to start production on their upcoming X-Men spin-off project entitled The New Mutants. Details on the project have for the most part been placed under lock and key, yet based on some new reporting in the trades as in Entertainment Weekly, a few new bits have started to emerge.

What we know so far is: The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone will direct The New Mutants, which is based on the pages of Marvel Comics, first created by Chris Claremont in the early 1980s. The series focuses on team of teenage mutants who are attempting to adjust and learn how to control their various powers…a “X-Men-lite” if you will. Recently, it was announced that The Witch breakout Anya Taylor-Joy and Game of Thrones standout Maisie Williams would lend their talents to the film, portraying Magik (whose specialty is teleportation) and Wolfsbane (who can shift into a wolf), respectively.

News broke today that actress Rosario Dawson appears to be currently in talks to join the film as well. The role in question may well be that of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mutant who serves as mentor to the teenage superheros in training. Dawson, fittingly, already has some superhero experience. She plays nurse Claire Temple in the Marvel/Netflix universe, beginning her stint on Daredevil and continuing onward to the upcoming The Defenders. She also recently voiced a part in the hit The LEGO Batman Movie. Aside from Dawson, reportedly, Henry Zaga (Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why) may soon join the film playing the mutant Sunspot.

More specifically, Boone commented on the tone of the feature, offering this tease:

We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.

The New Mutants is expected to start production this July. Boone co-wrote the film alongside his The Fault in Our Stars scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The film is expected to open in theaters on April 13, 2018. Next year looks to be a headline year for Fox’s newly re-focused wing of the Marvel label – aside from The New Mutants, Fox will also release Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix next year.

We shall stay tuned.
