‘The Marvels’ Becomes The Lowest Grossing MCU Movie

While Beyoncé and Godzilla have entered the US box office to success, tentpole film The Marvels has dropped out of the top 10 for the weekend, in only its fourth week. It’s moving slowly toward a $200 million total, making this the lowest-grossing MCU film to date.

As ComicBook.com points out, a November release could be a lucrative move for a film to make, benefiting through Thanksgiving and the holidays.

However, audiences aren’t turning out in droves for this one, so much so that Disney will no longer share some details of the box office totals.

In a statement from Disney themselves, they wrote that “with The Marvels box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.

The first film to hold the title of lowest-grossing in the MCU, 2008’s Incredible Hulk, took in $265 globally, but the Edward Norton-led movie was able to stay within the top 10 at the domestic box office through the first five weeks of its run.

Compared to the other lower grossing MCU films, Captain America: The First Avenger took in $370 million globally, Black Widow made $379 million globally, and The Eternals made $401 million worldwide.

Seeing The Marvels flounder in the box office has shocked many, including Disney CEO Bob Iger. Recently, Iger revealed at the NYT DealBook Summit 2023 that “The Marvels was shot during COVID, and there wasn’t enough supervision on set [from executives.]”
