According to Variety, The Batman has spent three weeks atop the box office charts. But after the release of Paramount’s The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the superhero film looks to end its reign. The Lost City is projected to earn the top spot with $30 million earned in its opening weekend. Paramount’s adventure rom-com came in with $11.5 million from 4,253 locations on its opening day, after grossing $2.5 million on Thursday with previews. The film brings an impressive start considering the romantic comedy genre has been a dying breed and lacks in getting audiences to the theaters during the past few years.
The Lost City stands out as the not-so-typical rom-com. It boasts a grand jungle setting over a New York City backdrop, is prone to violence, and a sense of scale that played a part in convincing ticket buyers to perceive the film as an event worth attending. In the film, Bullock plays a romance novelist who is kidnapped by a billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe). He seeks her knowledge of an ancient language to find treasure. Tatum plays the role of the novelist’s hunky book cover model who sets out to rescue her. Critics are calling the film a “guilty pleasure”, a hunt that hopes to be more progressive by alternating who is saving who throughout their journey. It has received a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on Cinemascore.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman has held the top box office spot for the last three weeks, generating hefty amounts of box office grosses since its release on March 4. The Warner Bros. release added another $5.5 million this past weekend, dropping 49% from last week. In the North American box office, the film has grossed $316 million, an impressive feat during the pandemic era, becoming the second highest-grossing release during COVID-19.
