Cristopher Nolan’s newest film Tenet recently crossed the $250 million mark at the global box office. However, the pandemic seems to have crippled the film’s ability to sell tickets domestically.
After making $4.7 million during its third weekend of play in North America, the time-bending action-thriller has grossed a domestic total of $36.1 million.
Tenet debuted to $4.3 million in Japan this last weekend, which is more than Interstellar or Dunkirk made during their debuts. The film made another $5.6 million in China, giving it a total of $60 million in the country.
Nolan’s $205 million film struggle to earn at the domestic box office has caused worry that most U.S. moviegoers are not ready to return to theaters, even with more rigorous sanitation measures and social distancing.
As a result of the lack of ticket sales, studios have once again rearranged their release dates. This includes the delay of Wonder Woman 1984, which was planned for release on October 2.
As of Friday, about 73 percent of the domestic marketplace has opened, including most of California.
Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki. The film has been mostly well received, with Metacritic score of 69 and a fresh 73 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
